Everyone needs to try and eat healthy and pay attention to the amount of nutrition they are getting, but especially the elderly. As we get older our body will start to lose bone and muscle and gain fat because our hormones are not as active as they used to be.

Water

The amount of water in your body decreases with age. Because of this, it is very easy for elderly individuals to get dehydrated. Very often they will not even have the feeling of thirst. Other times it can be too much work for them to even pour a glass of water. It is recommended that they drink at least 1 ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of weight that they have.

Protein

At the elderly stage of life, protein becomes extremely important. Protein is used to support a healthy immune system and prevent the wasting of your muscle. Because the energy needs are less, older individuals should try and eat high quality protein like eggs, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

Carbs & Fiber

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for your whole entire body. Carbs are found in bread, cereals, pasta, and other grain products. You can also avoid constipation if your diet is high in fiber.

Fat

Don’t necessarily avoid all fat, but you should definately limit the amount of fat that you eat. You can control the amount of fat intake by picking out lean meats, low fat dairy products, and when you cook, avoid frying, because this just adds grease to the equation.

Iron

With the elderly, iron deficiency can been seen in individuals who arn’t eating much. Some good sources for iron are lean red meats, or breakfast cereals.

Zinc

Zinc is important with the elderly, and a big issue is, it’s not absorbed into their bodies well. Meat, poultry, and fish can really help you meet your daily requirements for zinc that is needed to help live a healthy life.

Calcium

Most elderly individuals are not getting enough calcium in their daily diets. A good amount of them feel that milk upsets their stomach, and because of this they tend to avoid it. The amount of calcium that they should be trying to aquire is around 1,500 mg per day. As a substitute for milk, nonfat powdered milk can be used in some recipes instead. Some other foods like yogurt, low fat cheese, and broccoli can also give you the required amount of calcium that your body needs.

Vitamin B12

A good amount of elderly people tend to suffer from a deficiency in Vitamin B12 due to a condition known as atrophic gastritis. This is a common condition that comes from the lack of the ability to secrete sufficient stomach acid to kill the bacteria. Ingested bacteria can then survive and reside in the stomach and the upper part of the small bowel. This issue affects roughly 20% of people between the age of 60 and 69, and 40% of individuals over the age of 80. Vitamin B12 is found in protein food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases Vitamin B12 from proteins in foods during the digestion process. Once B12 is released it is combined with a substance called intrinsic factor, then absorbed by the intestinal tract. You can find Vitamin B12 in foods that come from animals, such as fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products.

Every one of the nutrients that have been mentioned here are needed to keep an aged body in good and proper health. Try and remain active and strive your best for a well balanced daily diet. Just because the body is aged, doesn’t mean that with the right care and nutrients you cant enjoy a healthy, happy, and long life.

You bodies metabolism is the rate by which your body produces and consumes energy and calories. If you have a high metabolsim level you can burn fat, and lose weight fast with a small amount of activity. There are several different factors that can affect the metabolism. Muscle tissue, the frequency of meals, genetics, stress levels, your personal diet, and levels of activity. Metabolism can slow down when there is loss of muscle because of not enough physical activity, or when your body turns to cannibalize its own tissue because there is not enough food energy to sustain it, even the slow down of physical activity that comes naturally as we get older. Let’s go over some ways to get your metabolism up to a higher level.

The amount of muscle that you have is a very big part in your ability to burn calories and shed fat off your body. Because of this, exercise plays a vital role in the increase of your metabolism level. You can build your strength and resistance by trying to work out at least twice a week. If you can work out with weights, that is even better, if not, just the physical activity can help a great deal. Simple, and easy tasks such as walking the dog, and using the stairs instead of the elevator can take some of the calories off by itself. The real goal here is to try and match the amount of eating to the amount of activity you have.

Make sure that you eat breakfast every day. A great majority of people are starting to ignore the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The fact still remains, that people that eat breakfast, are usually thinner than the people who decide to skip breakfast. Your metabolism can slow down a great deal if you wait to eat breakfast in the middle of the morning, and can drecrease even more if you end up waiting until the afternoon to eat.

Steer clear of sugar. Sugar lets the body store fat. A good recommendation is that you should try to eat food that helps sustain an even level of blood-sugar. To help keep your blood sugar stabilized, you should try to exercise 2-3 times a week.

Try eating some spicy foods. A good number of hot cuisines with peppers can increase your metabolism level.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Research has shown us that it is risky when people do not get enough sleep, and then gain weight. It is also a good thing to remember that your muscles are regenerated in the last couple hours of your sleep.

Increase the amount of water that you drink. Water can flush out the toxins that are produced whenever the body burns fat. Remember that a great deal of bodily functions involve water in some way, shape, or form. If your body lacks the water it needs, this causes your body’s system to slow down, and this can produce unnecessary stress as a result.

Try eating smaller meals. It is recommended that you try and eat 4-6 small meals that are spaced about 2-3 hours apart from each other.

Do Not Skip Meals. Usually people tend to skip meals thinking that this will help them lose weight. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Your metabolism actually slows down when you skip meals, making it harder to lose weight.

Plan your meals out in detail. Always make sure that you are preparing the rigth amount of food to eat at the designated time frames. Do not make the big mistake of eating sporadicly.

Stress is Evil! Stress, whether it is physical or emotional stress, triggers a release of the steroid named cortisol, which slows down your metabolism. In additon to this, be aware that people tend to eat more when they are stressed.

Green Tea can be the key. Green tea can be used as an alternative to coffee. Tea can actually stimulate your metabolism, and unlike coffee, it has no unwanted side effects when you drink too much of it.

Make sure that you include more energy foods in your daily diet. Foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains can increase your energy, as well as your metabolism.

If you have the patience and the determination, it is not impossible to achieve your desired weight. You have to stabilize your metabolism level, which is a vital role in losing weight. Eating correctly, and exercising is not just something you do, it has to turn into your way of life.

Fast food has become a huge part of todays lifestyle. This makes it extremely hard to teach our children how to eat correctly. It seems the cheapest and easiest foods are the ones that are the least nutritious for them. If you gave your child the choice between a healthy food and a junk food, it’s almost guaranteed you will not like the result you get.

It is close to impossible to get kids to eat all healthy foods, but there are a few different ways to try and get your children to try a few different kinds, and hopefully they will like a couple. Get creative on the ways you introduce the healthy choices to your children. This may be harder than you think. Let’s look at a few different helpful techniques to get your kids to eat healthy.

Try sneaking in some healthy food. It would be fantastic if our kids understood the importance behind fruits and vegetables. This is hard to accomplish though. But you can try to sneak a lil healthy choices into their life. Maybe try making muffins or bread out of bananas or apples. You can even make a home made pizza and put some spinach on it.

Come up with some funny names for fruits and vegetables. Broccoli can be refered to as “trees”. There is a wide variety of names that you can come up with to call fruits and vegetables. Most children usually prefer to eat different foods that sound fun, so make up some names that are fun.

Try and make the food taste better. You can use ranch dressing to add a lil flavor to broccoli. Add peanut butter to celery sticks. There are many different combinations for vegetables that can make them tase so much better. You might even try letting your child choose a topping for a vegetable, even if what they choose isn’t something you would normally like.

Dressing up, isn’t just for dolls anymore. Try dressing up the vegetables. Just like having funny names for the foods can help them eat healthy, your kids will enjoy you dressing up the vegetables to make them look funny as well. You can try this by different funny designs on the plate, or even try and make them look like people. A lot of parents do not really like their children to play with their food, but sometimes it can really help get them to eat healthier.

There are many different ways to get your kids to eat healthier, but you also need to make them enjoy it, and make it fun. This is seriously not an easy task by any means, mainly because kids usually do not like any type of food that is good for them. If you try using a little creativity, you may get your kids to develop a love for healthy foods and they will keep eating correctly throughout the course of their lives.

Grocery shopping is something everybody has to do at one time or another. Choosing the right foods can be difficult. So lets go over some tips that can help make things easier for you.

1. NEVER go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. This can really hurt your cause, especially when you are trying to shop healthy.

2. Look for canned fruits and tuna that are packed in water, not oil or even syrup.

3. Look at the nutritional labels of your foods. See if you see the words “hydrogenated” or even “partially hydrogenated”. The sooner you see them appear on the list, the higher the amount of unhealthy trans fatty acids are in the food.

4. Avoid buying turkey with the skin still on it, and if you are looking to buy chicken, buy a chicken breast meal instead.

5. When you are looking for frozen dinners, try and pick the ones that are not just low in fat, but low in cholesterol and sodium too.

6. If you arn’t getting enough dairy products in your daily intake, then pick up some calcium fortified orange juice.

7. Make sure to try and get whole grain breads, cereals, and rolls.

8. Try some cantaloupe. You can get a days worth of Vitamin C and beta carotene from just half a melon.

9. Don’t be fooled into grabbing yogurt that is covered with nuts or raisins. Most of the time the coating is made of sugar and is partially hydrogenated oils.

10. Make sure to treat yourself a little bit, not too much. Pick up some low fat treats for yourself, like pretzels, ginger snaps, and even angel food cake.

If you follow the tips above while your grocery shopping, you can steer clear of the bad foods and get the ones that you truly need. There is a wide variety of healthy foods at the grocery store, just it takes some will power to get yourself past the bad foods and make your way to the good food.

Eating healthy is something that we should all strive to do, eventhough it can be hard at times. To truly eat healthy, you need to really make the right food choices. Eating healthy is all about what you eat, and how much you eat, which makes the choices that you make very important to the results that you are looking for. Let’s cover some of the sections of the food pyramid and learn a little about your daily intake requirements.

Grains:

You should try and take in about 6 ounces of grains a day. To do this, try and eat 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, breads, rice, crackers, or pasta. You can get about an ounce of grains in a single slice of bread, or 1 cup of cereal.

Vegetables:

Vegetables should be varried. You should try to eat 2 1/2 cups of vegetables every day. You need to start eating more of the dark vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach. Carrots and sweet potatoes are good vegetables also. Do your best to also eat more dry beans. Examples of some different dry beans can be peas, pinto beans, and even kidney beans.

Fruits:

Fruits are extremely important in your nutrition. You need to try and eat 2 cups of fruits every single day. Try and focus on eating a variety, like fresh fruits, frozen fruits, canned fruits, even dried fruits as a snack is nice to have. You can drink fruit juces too, but try and use moderation. Check the labels for the amounts of nutrients in the juices.

Milk:

Milk is your friend which is very rich in calcium. Adults should aim for 3 cups of milk a day. Kids however need 2-8 cups of milk a day. Generally 2 cups of milk is where you want to be. When deciding on different milk products or yogurt, try and focus on the fat-free or low-fat options. If you do not like milk, or even can’t have milk, get your hands on some lactose free products or other means of calcium like fortified foods and beverages.

Meat and Beans:

With meat and beans you should aim for 5 ounces per day as the ideal goal. Always try for lean when it comes to your protein. When you are preparing meat, always bake it, broil it, or grill it. Doing this can help keep grease out of the equation, and then you are eating healthier. You should do your best to have a variety as well, with more fish, beans, peas, and nuts.

When cooking the food, try and limit the solid fats such as butter, margarine, shortening, and lard. These foods can really add some flavor to your meals, but at the same time they also raise your cholesterol. So do your best to keep track of how much you add to your meals as well as how much of this is in other foods you eat.

When dealing with your saturated fat, trans fat, and low sodium, you can check the nutritional facts label. This label can be found on any food package you pick up, and it will inform you of all the facts you need to know about the food item.

When you make the right choices in what you eat, you will start having more control over your lifestyle. Don’t forget to exercise, as this goes perfectly with a healthy eating lifestyle. It does not even matter your age. You can be young or old, short or tall, eating healthy will help you get and keep an active lifestyle for years and years to come.

You can find the nutrition label located on every single food item in the grocery store. It will tell you all the information you need about that food. This information is not really the reader friendly type. But no worries, it is eaiser than you may think. Let’s go over the main parts of the nutrition label now.

Serving Size:

This is based on the amount that the average person eats of that item each serving. If you have two similar foods that you want to compare, the serving sizes will be similar as well, so you can compare them without having to break out the calculator.

% Daily Value:

This tells you how the food item will fit into a 2,000 calorie a day diet. This will help you understand if the food is really offering a good amount of nutrients or not really.

The Middle of The Label:

The nutrient information you can see listed in the middle of the label are the ones that are the most important to your health. This information can help you calculate your daily limit of fat, fiber, sodium, and other various nutrients that may be in the item.

Vitamins and Minerals:

The percent daily value that you can find here is the same exact one as the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance for Vitamins and Minerals. Make sure that you are incorporating enough vitamins and minerals into your daily diet.

Well now you can say you understand the nutrition labels on the food items. And now you can have an easier time eating healthy, because you know where to find the facts, and what the facts mean. Eating correctly is essential for us to live long, happy, healthy lives. Use the nutrition label to assist you in your shopping to ensure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs.

Everybody knows that your body runs on fuel. This fuel is built up of nutrients that affect our body’s performance daily. There are things you have to consider in your day to day life. There are a lot of myths about eating, and sometimes these myths can do our body more harm than good. So let’s try and clear up some of these here and now.

Some of you may have heard about low carb diets. Well it is good to keep control over how many carbs we intake, but the fact remains that your body relies on carbohydrates for your muscles and for your body to store energy. Make sure that you watch how many carbohydrates you eat, but make sure you are also getting enough of them in your daily diet.

Are you already dieting? Are you getting enough calories in your diet? Yes, losing weight deals with cutting down on the calories, but losing weight too fast isn’t safe at all. The trick about dieting is you need to develop a way of life about it. If you gradually change your eating habits so that your aiming to lose just a couple pounds at a time. You stand a better chance of keeping the weight off. When going for the gusto so to speak, you diet hardcore for a few weeks, maybe a few months, and you might be doing great, but at this rate you’re going to eventually break down and splurge. Then you mess up your metabolism and you have to start the process over again, hopefully without taking too many steps backwards. Make sure that you eat enough calories in your daily diet so that your body will run properly and you still have the energy to live life.

Maybe your already exercising, and working out. If you start to hear this rumbling in your stomach, pay attention to it. It means you are hungry. Don’t push yourself to work out on an empty stomach just because you think, “Well I am not eating anything, so all this working out is pure loss of fat”. The truth is, your body needs fuel, just like your car. It isn’t good to run on little to no fuel in the system. Before you exercise, work out, or do any other kind of physical activity, try and eat some type of healthy snack. For example eating an apple before you work out. This will ensure that your body has some nutrients to use as fuel, and you can still make the work out count, because you didn’t add much of anything, but you added enough to run properly.

Are you one of those people that skip breakfast in the morning? Maybe you’re too busy in the morning, or you may even think that cutting this meal out, cuts down on the food intake, and helps you lose weight. The truth is, you just woke up and are starting your day. Your body needs some fuel to get through the day. If you do not put some nutrients into your body, it will start to use up any that is left over it still has. When your body has no more nutrients to go off of, you start to see or feel effects of this throughout your day. Try to eat a nutritious breakfast, even just a little bit to get your body going for the day.

Do you think because you eat healthy and exercise you can eat anything you want? Eating healthy and exercising does not excuse you from making sure that your body gets the proper nutrients that it needs. We all need the same nutrients in our bodies. Whether we do any kind of physical activities or not. Make sure to eat your fruits and vegetables just like everyone else.

Are you relying on energy bars and energy drinks? The energy drinks are becoming more and more popular all the time with new flavors constantly coming out. Do these drinks and bars give you the same nutrients? The real answer is NO!! These things are perfectly fine to have once in a while, but they do not have the proper amount of antioxidants that your body needs to prevent cancer. Fruits and vegetables are the way to go, because they are packed full of vitamins, minerals, fluid, and fiber. You may be able to cover a few of these things with energy drinks or energy bars, but they don’t hold a candle to the real deal of fruits and vegetables.

What do you drink? Do you know that water, milk, and different kinds of juices are the best things to drink if you are an active person. Make sure to drink often throughout your day. Don’t wait for you to feel thirsty to go get a drink. Once you feel like you’re getting thirsty, your body is already processing on too low of a level. Drink before you get that feeling, and keep your body running properly.

Eating correctly is the main step towards feeling better, and healthier. If you change the eating habits you may have picked up, so that you eat correctly you will find yourself just how much it can really change your life. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are. Eating healthy is something everyone should strive to do. Start eating the right way starting TODAY!

To become a healthy eater you must educate yourself and be smart about what foods are healthy, and learn to incorporate healthy foods into your daily diet. Being smart about your food does not necessarily mean that you have to calculate grams or the amount of fat in the foods. It is not even studying the food labels and counting calories. It is much simpler than that.

Eating correctly is about having a well balanced and moderate eating style. This style should consist of healthy meals at least three times a day. When you eat healthy you will find yourself eating different types of foods. Don’t limit yourself to just one specific food type or group of foods.

Eating healthy requires that you have a little bit of leniency. You may end up eating too much or not enough. Maybe even end up eating foods that are more or less nutritious. No matter what, you should always try to give your body and brain the fuel that it regularly needs so you can be strong and alerty in your daily life.

A person that eats healthy is usually a good problem solver. As you become a healthy eater you learn to take care of yourself, and you start to eat with good judgement and make wise decisions on what you eat, and how much of it you eat. It is important that you are always aware of what you eat, and how it effects your body.

If someone is not able to control their eating habbits, you can also see this take effect in other areas of their lifestyle. People can end up spending too much money, talking a lot, or they can even start going to bed later and later. It is crutial to have patterns in your life, and not just eating patterns. Your body requires sleep. Make sure that you get enough sleep so your body can be rejuvenate, and be ready to take on the next day fully recharged and alert.

Always keep in mind that restricting food will always turn out bad. To properly eat healthy you need to realize that it is a lifestyle change. This is something you need to do day in and day out. Learn to adapt eating correctly into your daily lives, and you will find your life getting easier, more organized, and you’ll be healthier.

Students at college can find themselves having a hard time eating correctly because of all the late night pizza and fast food that is in the college lifestyle. Of course these meals are quick and simple, but are they really a healthy choice for the student? If you are actually trying to answer this question, the answer is NO.

The choices that a student makes when it comes to how they eat, can greatly affect if they can stay awake in class or if they will catch the disease floating around the school campus. Don’t think of this as just stop eating junk food, and you can be healthy. You need to make sure that you are getting your proper amounts of proteins, carbs, vitamins, and minerals that everybody needs to include in their daily diet.

Illness floats around school campuses all the time. As a student you can do your part in defending against illness if you make sure you take the proper levels of vitamins and minerals. Now just because these vitamins and minerals can help you fight off illness, does not mean that you should run out to the store, and pickup a great big stock of vitamins and supplements. Students really need to rely on nutritious food as their sources for vitamins and minerals.

Your body needs vitamins for a variety of different reasons. You can get Vitamin C from citris fruits. Find Vitamin A in milk and other dairy products. Vitamin E can be found in nuts, whole weat products, and even some green leafy vegatables. Make sure that you focus on adding these foods to your daily diet so you can eat correctly, and stay healthy.

While on campus, try to avoid the soft drinks and seek out the juice vending machines. Look for different entrees that are available to you and visit the salad bar if you can, where you can find fresh vegatables. Broccoli and cauliflower can be heated up in the microwave, for instant steamed vegetables. In the dining hall, you can always find healthy cereal and a good amount of fresh fruit.

Just try and remind yourself that eating healthy is not just avoiding junk food, and greasy foods. Eating correctly deals with you finding a balance in your diet and making sure your body gets the right nutrients and vitamins so your body can run at its peak performance day in and day out. Plus this can assist you in staying awake in your classes, and adds to your focus factor.
